Since its inauguration in 1958, this high-rise housing block near Brussels North Station has been a landmark building, yet something of an alien object in the city. With its 13 storeys, it clearly overtopped the structures of the surrounding migrant and red-light districts, and its position, set back from the street line, underlined its unique character., , Fifty-five years later, however, a rehabilitation was overdue for this social-housing scheme and the neighbouring building, erected at the beginning of the 1970s. The competition organized by the public urban-development agency Beliris was won by the A2M architectural office with an ambitious concept for the refurbishment of the two structures to passive-house standards.
