1924 Map of Ankara City: Recognizing Ankara with an Old Map
During the War of Independence, military officers of Department of Mapping coming from Istanbul prepared the scaled map of Ankara city. This map shows the city with its entire castle, surrounding settlements, districts, and the buildings. Topographically the map was prepared in 1/4000 scale in three-color with a title and legend. It also includes direction lines and scale sign. In this map, interpreting the city in its 1920s, the districts were shown in square scale, on which the water lines and fountains as well as the Muslim and Christian graveyards not-existent today were marked. In addition, the creeks of Ankara that are faded totally today and Hatip Stream, Çubuk Stream, and İncesu Creeks were shown in the map. Besides the religious buildings, also in this map are the newly opened settlements such as Darül-muallim, built during the reign of Abdulhamit II., Taş Mektep, Sanayi Mektep, Station buildings, The Grand National Assembly and Second National Assembly Buildings, and Ankara Palas. It is understood that in these areas there was development plan design. In 1917, in Ankara there was a huge fire incidence, which destructed the whole town up to the district on the western side of the castle and up to Yahudi district, called as Harik Mahalli at the map. This study intends to present this map, known as 1924 Ankara map for long years, thus fulfilling the duty for the city that we lived for long years.
