INAWASHIRO GALLERY: Reconstruction of dozo (warehouse made of soil) destroyed by the Great East Japan Earthquake
Abstract This warehouse was originally completed in Inawashiro‐cho as a workshop of a brewery in 1889. It was damaged by volcanic rocks of the Bandai volcano eruption in 1888 at the time of the completion of the framework. In the following year, this warehouse was completed as a symbol of regional reconstruction. After 123 years, on March 11, 2011, the warehouse was visited again by the Great East Japan Earthquake and was destroyed completely. This warehouse which became only a frame was moved by human power only on the foundation of the reinforced concrete structure made in the adjacent place. This traditional technology to move the building only with manpower is called hikiya. This project has rebuilt the dozo that was damaged by the Great East Japan Earthquake into a gallery as a symbol of the reconstruction of this area.
