The saving of Dositej's Lyceum (1923-1949)
This paper deals with events in the 1920s and 1930s, when the idea of demolishing Dositej's Lyceum was proposed on several occasions, as part of the change in the regulation of the block between Kralja Petra, Gospodar Jovanova, Višnjićeva and Gospodar Jevremova streets, and the expansion of the market on Gospodar Jovanova (Jovanova pijaca). Although these events are not unknown, the research presented here shows that they were much more complex - with their resolution taking considerably longer - than previously thought. This paper primarily draws on sources including archival material and artefacts preserved in the Belgrade City Library, the Belgrade City Museum, the Historical Archives of Belgrade and the Cultural Heritage Preservation Institute of Belgrade, newspaper articles, as well as the results of previously published research. The goal of the paper was to reconstruct, as precisely as possible, the events surrounding the planned demolition of the Lyceum, to summarize the events that led to its preservation, and to highlight the impact of these events on future efforts to protect immovable cultural heritage in Belgrade.
