The research project “Sources for the History of Art Museums in Portugal” stems from the need to study, inventory and publicly disseminate primary sources related to the creation and activity of art museums in Portugal. Since this is an original initiative in Portugal, concerning Museum Studies and Art History fields, it was decided to give priority to studying the archives of four of the most relevant Portuguese museological institutions: National Academy of Fine-Arts, National Museum of Ancient Art, National Palace of Ajuda, and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. This project aspires to promote serious, innovative approaches, thereby supporting the organization of a History of Museums in Portugal.
