Memória e mitos. O touro na obra de Jorge Vieira. A exposição como campo alargado
Jorge Vieira (1922-1998) was one of the most important Portuguese sculptors of the second half of the 20th century. His work is predominantly eclectic, moving briskly between surrealism and abstractionism, anchored in his interest in pre-classical Mediterranean and popular arts, especially in the diversity of ceramic practices. To celebrate its centenary, the Municipality of Beja presented, from November 2022 to March 2023, the exhibition Memory and Myths. The Bull in Jorge Vieira's Work centred on the theme of the bull, one of the constant motifs in Vieira's iconography. This theme made possible the extended work of a multidisciplinary team of art historians and archaeologists, going back to the importance of the bull as a mythical figure of the city and territory of Beja. Thus, an anthropological vision of a contemporary artistic practice was proposed, breaking chronologies and historical contexts that question the usual modes of art historiography. It was also proposed that the exhibition itself could work as a place for implementing museological practices that combine research into different fields (History of Art and Archaeology) with the exercise of a talking museography: the accessibility of the «tables» where the pieces were exhibited; the plastic game between the walls with drawings and the “tables” with sculpture; the full visibility of the texts of each of the exhibition nuclei.
