Deal with the general concern on the rise of gated communities, the present study sought to measure the recent production of gated single-family house developments in the Greater Paris Region. The results are surprising; they show that the phenomena is minor in term of quantity but also forms rather well integrated into their urban environment, even participating in the current effort of urban densification. Beyond concerns related to the values of these figures, what are the issues facing local governments in terms of planning and management of their territory? Without actually contributing to the model of a “gated city”, these specific urban forms, poorly mutable, indeed tend to create a rigid urban fabric as well as some difficulties in term of management of the local life.
