School-building architecture of the Russian provinces. Late 19th – early 20th century
Based on publications in the magazines “Zodchiy” (The Architect) and “Stroitel” (The Builder) (1896-1905), the article offers an overview of how educational institutions of junior and middle levels developed in the provincial cities of the Russian Empire (rural schools, colleges, gymnasiums). The school architecture of Central Russia is compared with Far Eastern buildings and projects of colleges and schools of the early 20th century. In the conclusion, the problem of a lack of demand for the national style in the architecture of educational institutions is raised. This is the first publication of school designs for the cities of Khabarovsk and Harbin found in the archives.
