Can we rethink urban production and build a post-carbon city using the same actors and methods that helped build the thermo-industrial modern town? One such challenge is at the core of urban experimentation, in particular through the fairly recent avatar of the urban demonstrator, which is an exempting urban object supposedly allowing greater plasticity and flexibility in how we make and manage the city. Drawing from a study of the Démonstrateur Industriel pour la Ville Durable (DIVD) programme; this article analyses what the regime of urban demonstration does to the practice of experimentation and urban production. It demonstrates the challenges of introducing radically new forms of public action. Some of these difficulties can be conceptualised as misunderstandings about the object, audiences and objectives of urban demonstration, which condition part of the significance of what is being experimented with.
