Numerous studies into the impacts for regional economies emanating from infrastructure facilities — and especially from educational facilities — have demonstrated conclusively that such facilities are capable of generating both positive and stimulating effects on regional economies. Hitherto no comparable studies have been available for the field of social infrastructure, and in particular relating to facilities dedicated to helping, nursing and caring for people with disabilities. In the first empirical study of this type the focus is on the economic significance of larger-scale facilities for the disabled for the economy of the surrounding area, in this case based on the example of the Dominikus Ringeisen-Werk (DRW) in Bavaria. The key finding resulting from this study is that major facilities for the disabled of this type are indeed the source of a very considerable stimulus for the region in which they are located.
