Method of direct integration is effective approach for making flexural calculations of nonuniform members through use of generalized functions; operational properties of pertinent functions are reviewed, and formula for finding reciprocal of series of step functions established; simple formulas for calculating flexural constants of members with stepwise variation of stiffness are obtained; tapered or haunched beams can be conveniently replaced by appropriate stepped beams as excellent approximations.
