Results of deflection and stresses in ring having 2 or 3 hinges spaced evenly along circumference and subjected to uniform external pressure, derived on basis of small-deflection ring theory, indicate that ring bends out round from onset of loading; deflection is nonlinear function of loading and reaches point of instability defined by deflections exceeding all bounds; hinges may be placed offset from controidal axis thereby eliminating displacement out of round and problem then reduces to eigenvalue problem for critical buckling load.
