Surface treatment of high-strength bolted joints
Effect of galvanizing on ASTM A325 and A490 high-strength bolts and performance of bolted joints under static loads in which faying surfaces were galvanized, cold zinc painted, metallized, treated with vinyl wash or with another rust-preventing paint, were studied; comparisons were made with nongalvanized bolts and with joints with untreated mill-scale surfaces; torque necessary to tighten high-strength bolts is increased by galvanization, but this effect may be almost eliminated by use of power torquing, or by lubrication; hot dip galvanizing gave average coefficient of friction of 0.23; other surface treatments gave values between that of dry mill-scale and that of sandblasted metal surfaces.
