Emergency closure of deeply located gate system to diversion tunnel
During construction of Messaure Dam on Lule River in northern Sweden, water was bypassed by diversion tunnel; tunnel intake consisted of two vertical shafts, each with two opposite openings; stage openings in each shaft were successively closed by one specially designed vertical-lift gate unit calculated for up to 73 m water load; when reservoir filling had reached level corresponding to 53 m head on gates slide occurred in righthand bank of former upstream diversion channel and dam side openings of both shafts were completely filled with stones and gravel.
