Engineering behavior of Canadian muskeg was studied both in laboratory and in field; it was shown that strength of peat was essentially frictional and that its permeability varied widely during consolidation; two distinct stages of consolidation were observed; short-term stage which is believed to be expulsion of free pore water in peat, and long-term stage which is believed to be compression of solid peat matter; long-term pore pressures were observed which are believed to be associated with compression of solids.
