Scaffolding of dome of St. Paul's Cathedral
Design and erection of scaffold structure around Dome in London, England; height of building to top of cross is 365 ft; scaffold consists of two outer rings of tubular scaffold, braced in elevation and also braced together in section; plan forms cylinder 9 ft thick by 90 ft high; internal scaffolding of cylinder is supported by radial beams which in turn are carried by cross girders at top of scaffold structure; braced cylinder acts as hollow column to carry whole of vertical load, and as cantilever to resist horizontal wind load; internal scaffold is shaped to profile of dome with walkways and guard-rails next to dome surface at 6 ft lifts.
