Cromwell slip-form paver trials
Description of use of first major slip-form paver brought into England to lay unreinforced and reinforced concrete roadways which contain doweled contraction and expansion joints; quick-erecting joint assemblies were developed to suit unreinforced concrete where supply vehicles used base of roadways under construction; it is concluded that unreinforced concrete with frequent doweled joints can be laid to good or very good standard of riding quality, and that reinforced concrete achieved good standard; it was found that present arrangement of vibrators did not compact concrete fully, except where mix was specially chosen for easy compaction.
