Urban railway construction in soft ground
Most established soft ground tunneling techniques are being applied to rapid transit in Osaka, Japan; piles are driven at each side of roadway with temperary steel decking between them for cut-and-cover method; in very soft and water-bearing ground long sections have been constructed by sinking caissons; shield-driven tunneling was adopted on three sections; to eliminate reaction torque of tunneling machine, cutters on Osaka machines were mounted on two concentric cutting heads, which were rotated in opposite directions; Italian ICO S process is used in restricted places with narrow trench digger, and uses bentonite to support trench walls during excavation; concrete is subsequently introduced from below and displaces bentonite leaving cast solid wall in ground.
