Mechanical parameters of stress-corrosion cracking
Effect of notches upon mechanical properties of metal specimen is discussed; in particular, mechanical parameters required to create large areas of metal at tip of crack too rapidly for environment to repassivate are considered in detail; plane strain subcritical crack growth is of considerable importance in this respect; use of stress intensity factor and strain-energy release rate in determining fracture mechanism is discussed; role of strain-rate, grain size and cold work is briefly considered with reference to three categories of cracking arising from anodic dissolution, H embrittlement, and tarnish film rupture.
