Increase in rigidity and fatigue strength of bolted joints loaded in contact plane
Effect of bolt tightening on fatigue strength of joint was experimentally investigated; it was found that fourfold increase in tightening prestress raised sevenfold joint's service life; this is caused, among other factors, by reduction in fretting corrosion due to increased stiffness of joint and reduced friction between bolt and plate; in joints working at elevated temperatures, bolt tightening sharply lowered creep rate and contributed to increased joint life.
