Driving of tunnel, 3 mi long and of horseshoe shape with nominal cross sectional area of 297 sq ft, was feature of Guthega hydroelectric power project; tunnel takes water from Guthega river near Mount Kosciusko, at elevation of 5100 ft, underneath mountain range to welded steel penstocks 3300 ft long which deliver to two 30, 000 kw, 11 kv turbogenerators housed in reinforced concrete building.
