Steering and propulsion of H.M.S. Nelson in restricted channel
Investigations on grounding of battleship in entrance to Portsmouth Harbor, Jan 12 1934, and narrow margins involved; incident was reproduced by test of model 4 ft long in model of harbor entrance; ship must hold course very near center of fairway for steady steering; results corroborated by tests of 16-ft model in relation to inclined false bottom; hull resistance greatly increased in shallow water. (see also Shipbldg and Shipg Rec n 10 Sept 8 1949 p 295-7)
