Significance of pore pressure in hydraulic structures
It is shown that under and within any concrete structure founded below water level, or with water on one side, hydrostatic uplift acts over entire horizontal area; magnitude of uplift force, not area of application, should be subject of investigation; it is also shown that hydrostatic force against dam is applied progressively along route of seepage, instead of against upstream face; implications of these principles.
