Diffusion equation for neutrons in pile with finite sides and having three dimensional lattice structure of fissionable material and moderator is solved to first three orders by expansion in spherical harmonics; solution used to calculate difference in thermal utilizations of pile of infinite extent and one with finite sides; from this is obtained expression for diffusion length up lattice pile.
