Half of 2000-ft channel, of flood relief scheme in valley of River Lee in northeast London, is covered, remainder is open; prestressed concrete beams 30 in. deep, 24 in. wide have clear span of 53 ft 5 in; they are precast and prestressed and transported by rail to siding adjacent to culvert; beams made in two parts, one 37 ft 4 1/2 in. long and one 19 ft 4 1/2 in. long to suit 40-ft long "shock" tables; procedure of tensioning bars.
