Compressed air is used as extremely valuable auxiliary in utilizing slag from old blast-furnace slag heaps; material, gradually heaped up for many years in form of pieces and blocks 48 ft., and in places even 65 and 98 ft. in height, firmly caked together and become consolidated into compact mass similar to natural stone; use of hammer drills, pick hammers, and heavy concrete breakers for working slag heaps.
