Formula developed by N. Mononobe, Tokio, for computing frequency of free vibration of hollow truncated cones, is recommended for use in investigating vibration of tall chimneys; frequencies of several chimneys and lighthouses as calculated from this formula and as measured are compared, and official specification is advocated of lower limit for frequency of chimney stacks and similar structures liable to be set in vibration by wind.
