Project consists of three bridges and 11 1/2 mi. of concrete roads; bridge across James River is 4 1/2 mi. long; other two carry highway over Chuckatuck Inlet and Nansemond River; all three bridges are more or less typical in design; James River bridge, one of largest lift spans ever constructed, provides vertical clearance of 50 ft. above mean high water in closed position and 145 ft. above mean high water in open position, horizontal clearance being 250 ft.; vertical-lift span is flanked by four 90-ft. plate girder spans.
