Navigation channel had to be maintained with minimum depth of 8 ft and minimum bottom width of 100 ft at all times, either through existing channel or through cutoff; excavation by two diesel electric dredges of cutterhead type, with 24-in. intake and 20-in. discharge; Smithland Levee required 813,000 cu yd of hydraulic fills; cutoff and Levee are part of Red River Backwater Levee Project in Louisiana.
