Relation of certain frost phenomena to subgrade
Results of laboratory and field studies in Michigan; analysis of cause and effects of 156 heaves examined in field showed that 94 occurred in layer or pocket of fine-textured material, 22 in pocket of silt or very fine sand and silt surrounded by clay, 30 in medium to fairly coarse sand, and 6 in moderately coarse textures; remaining four occurred where subgrade soil appeared uniform with respect to character and moisture content. (see also Roads and Streets, vol. 71, no. 7, July 1931, pp. 272-276, 5 figs)
