Use of rolling forms in construction of multiple-barrel shell roof of new Metropolitan Opera House in New York City is discussed; fitted with heavy industrial casters, 30×50-ft shell forms roll between setups on scaffold-top tracks more than 60 ft from ground; before roof is completed, each of 5 form units will be used 5 times; longest free span for barrel-shell-and-valley-beam complex is 180 ft, from back of auditorium to proscenium wall at stage.
