Preventing mine subsidence in Pennsylvania
Hydraulic backfilling project of abandoned mine workings was undertaken in Wilkes-Barre in order to protect surface area of 58 acres; controlled flushing technique was used; specifications for project included rehabilitation of old workings to provide ventilation, crushing material to minus 3/4 in., drilling of boreholes, casing through alluvium, erection of hoppers, bulkheads, and drainage boxes, and piping of backfill material.
