Twenty-storey office block in Nigeria founded on loose sand
Design and construction of tall office building at Lagos in Nigeria, with particular reference to foundation difficulties and how these were overcome by mechanical compaction of loose natural sands to give dense substratum; stiffness of steel superstructure is provided by vertical bracings acting in conjunction with concrete slabs at each floor level; consequently it was necessary to adopt sequence of erection that entailed floor construction keeping pace with erection of steelwork; settlement and temperature movements are also discussed.
