Study is limited to structural distress caused by settlement of foundation; summary of conclusions found in literature indicates little disagreement on range of settlement needed to harm structure; some previous studies have resulted in empirical rules for correlating angle of slope between adjacent supports and incidence of cracking; conclusion is drawn that rate of settlement as well as type of structure have important effects on any such rules; bibliography of pertinent literature is given.
