Port Mann bridge, Vancouver, Canada
Bridge comprises main arch span of 1200 ft flanked by side spans of 360 ft; lowlying land on either side of main arch, together with high clearances, dictated use of long approaches; design and construction of long steel pipe piles, placed in prebored holes to overcome negative friction, are described; main steel superstructure is stiffened tied arch in which necessary stiffness and load distribution is provided by deep box stiffening girders; lighting system, composed of continuous light source mounted in handrail, is described. (see also Surveyor v 125 n 3789 Jan 16 1965 p 29-30,33)
