Retardation of asphalt hardening by chemical additives
Investigations were carried out to find materials which, when added to asphalt in small amounts, would reduce its tendency to harden by action of heat and air; from exploratory work described it is concluded that asphalts vary considerably in their tendency to harden when heated in presence of air, in case of certain asphalts which harden excessively, amount can be reduced 15 to 40% by incorporating 1 wt % of particular chemicals, and that there are indications that phenolic group in additive may be helpful in reducing hardening of asphalt; commercial asphalt and additives were used in tests; equipment used and method of testing are described.
