Tonnage of motorships built in European yards in 1929 slightly exceeded tonnage of steamships built, but tonnage of motorships now on order is twice that of steamships; British yards built 420,000 tons of motorships in 1929, Germany built 150,000 gross tons and Sweden and Denmark each 100,000 gross tons; 60 per cent of motorships built consisted of slow tramps; every important Diesel-engine builder in Europe has from 1 to 2 years' work on hand; fuel consumption for all purposes of most modern motorship is only 0.365 lb. per b.hp.-hr.
