For constant value of strain, deviatoric stress increases with increase in effective octahedral stress; ultimate shear strength can be approximated as linear function of effective octahedral stress; hyperbolic representation of stress-strain response provides convenient method for obtaining measure of ultimate shear strength using response of stress states other than failure.
