In-situ strength characteristics of soft clays
Change in effective stress condition resulting from sampling of saturated clays is examined; link, in terms of M.J.Hvorslev strength parameters is established between perfectly undisturbed sample strength and in-situ strength; theoretical analysis and supporting experimental data indicate that for normally consolidated saturated sensitive clays, in-situ strength and pore-pressure coefficient are significantly different from those measured on even perfectly undisturbed samples in unconsolidated-undrained triaxial compression tests; expression is proposed for evaluation of in-situ strength of normally consolidated saturated clays.
