Study of fired-clay bodies from Roman times
Examination of 3 bodies from Italy and 1 from England; compositions were deduced by chemical, X-ray, and differential thermal analyses and by microscope examination; porosity, pore size distribution, shrinkage on refiring, and changes in length after standing in water and after autoclaving were measured, and resistance to sea water was tested; it is concluded that, under conditions of severe exposure, these early fired clay bodies would be no more durable than those of modern times.
