Planning of rooms and tunnels in solid rocks; most of Swedish underground rooms and tunnels excavated in rock have been located in Archean gneisses and granites characterized by regular jointing; gneisses are generally more suitable for underground work than granites, and of granites coarse-grained are better suited than fine-grained; best gneisses are gray and characterized by winding pegmatite veins; Swedish Caledonides which contain multitude of tectonic zones and strongly schistose rocks are unsafe for underground works.
