Stress distributions associated with tee, cross, and right angle tunnel intersections, when located in uniform, uniaxial, stress field; stresses were determined by photoelastic methods; results indicate that maximum tensile circumferential and axial stresses in region of intersections are equal to or slightly less than those that exist in tunnel away from intersection; maximum compressive stresses at corner of intersection are approximately 60% greater than those in tunnel away from intersection; high stress region is localized, and maximum circumferential compression decays to tunnel value within distance of 1 diameter of intersection.
