Construction of 8282 ft long pilot tunnel beneath Loveland Pass, 60 mi west of Denver, Colo, is to study characteristics of rock formations, preparatory to driving twin highway tunnels to carry 4-lane Interstate 70 through mountains 1500 ft below Continental Divide; pilot tunnel has arch roof, is 11 ft 4 in. wide and 10 ft 8 in. high; instruments used in research include borehole extensometers and load cells; results of tests on blasting effects, loads on tunnel supports.
