Design of 23-ton hoist that consists of ratchet wheel driven by pawl on lever, which, in turn, is driven by piston in 2000 psi hydraulic cylinder; mechanism was contained in steel box 5 ft 3 in. sq by 2 ft 7 in. deep, mounted on side of spillway pier; each hoist contains electrically driven hydraulic pump; hoists are controlled from remote control board in which position of group of gates is indicated by one selsyn receiver; apparatus is well-adapted to spillways on soft foundations in which all gates or groups of gates must be opened in unison.
