Importance of free ends in triaxial testing
Lubricated end platens allow use of shorter test samples by removing dead zones; this largely overcomes nonuniformity of stress and deformation at all but small strains in triaxial test; preliminary tests on clays indicate that this is promising method to reduce testing time necessary for accurate pore pressure measurement, as well as piston friction; use of electrical pressure transducers for measuring pore pressures is described; system is particularly suitable if automatic recording is required.
