Principles of separation of solids from water by addition of chemicals are explained; as example, basin of Bacchus Marsh, Australia for lime-soda process is given; feature of basin is new slurry weir, for transferring old solids from top of slurry pool to concentrator at same rate as new ones are formed at bottom of slurry pool; calculations on quantity and concentration of slurry and resulting dimensional requirements; method of decanting supernatant liquor.
