Recent investigations at Military Experimental Establishment, Ministry of Defense, Christchurch, Hampshire, England of deflection and collapse of thin-walled, flexible tubes buried in compacted sand, when surface of sand was under static vertical overpressure are summarized; tubes were unstiffened and open ended, and were circular or square in section; surface loading was by means of uniform pressure applied hydrostatically; test specimens were made from mild steel sheet, and buried so that their longitudinal axes were horizontal; moisture content of sand was in range 1% to 3.5%, and average density after compaction was within small percentage of 104 lb/cu ft for all tests.
