Consolidation tests on clay subjected to freezing and thawing
Results of tests show that there can be significant reduction of moisture content of clay when it is frozen which can give large settlements on thawing, provided loading conditions remain constant; rapid consolidation may either be due to partial remolding effect or disturbance of clay structure, or more probably to separation of water from clay skeleton during freezing so that clay is effectively preconsolidated; on thawing, provided water can escape, clay will rapidly consolidate to volume corresponding to `ice crystallization pressure'.
