Anhydrous minerals and organic materials as sources of distress in concrete
Extent of problems with respect to deterioration of concrete from reactions involving hydration of partially or completely dehydrated components of aggregate, and reactions of organic materials associated with aggregates is defined; review of literature shows that there are three classes of minerals that may combine with water in concrete and increase in volume, oxides, zeolite and clays of montmorillonite category; approach applies also to byproduct aggregates such as cinders and slags.
