Entry velocity control limits drain sedimentation
Control of velocity of water entering subsurface drain is shown to effectively prevent sedimentation; anti-sedimentation concept based on Stokes Law setting velocity of particles is described; essential element for implementation of concept is entrance flow path or channel to drain in which both magnitude and direction of inflow velocity of water are controlled; laboratory tests are reported for different sized particles, shapes of opening, and cross-sectional areas of flow; tentative design criteria are suggested.
